Osteoarthritis Programs

Osteoarthritis affects thousands of Albertans

Osteoarthritis is a lifelong joint condition, can affect any joint in the body, and can make it difficult to participate in physical activity. Although osteoarthritis does not go away, the symptoms of this joint condition can be effectively treated and managed. Therapeutic exercise is an important component of symptom management. Many individuals living with osteoarthritis experience pain, stiffness, and joint irritability that restrict participation in exercise.

Individual treatment sessions may include manual therapy, massage, acupuncture, and modalities (cryotherapy, current, and ultrasound) aimed at reducing joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Once joint irritability is reduced, our therapists provide education regarding which exercises are most appropriate for each individual and guidance regarding activity progression.

We also offer the GLA:D program.

GLA:D Canada Program

GLA:D Canada is an education and exercise program for the treatment and management of osteoarthritis. It is an evidence-based program designed specifically for people living with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. The program was developed in Denmark, but it is now offered in numerous other countries, due to the success of the program. The program consists of 2 education sessions and 12 supervised exercise programs. The education sessions provide information on osteoarthritis symptoms and risk factors, treatment options, and which activities are safe to perform when living with osteoarthritis. The exercise sessions aim to improve muscle control and joint stability, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase participation in physical activity. After participation in the GLA:D Canada program, individuals will have improved confidence in their ability to self manage osteoarthritis.
