Sports Medicine Rehabilitation

Sports Medicine is a specialized area that addresses physical health and movement of the body. Physiotherapists are considered to be movement specialists. Through study, training, research, and experience they become experts on understanding how the body moves.

At Okotoks Physical Therapy, our therapists are passionate about athletics. They have extensive experience with sports-related injuries and have assisted athletes of all levels with injury prevention and recovery.

Rehabilitation is a collaborative process between the client and therapist. The client informs the therapist as to what sport they are striving to resume, and the therapist tailors treatments to meet those individualized goals. Sports physiotherapy treatments may include manual therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, massage, taping, modalities (such as ultrasound and current) and exercise prescription. Treatments aim to reduce pain, promote healing, reduce the risk of injury, and increase participation in physical activity.

Our therapists regularly review current research on sports-related injuries to ensure the advice provided is evidence-based. They place a strong emphasis on education and self-management, as it is important for each client to understand how an injury occurred in order to reduce the risk of further injury. Each client receives a home exercise program tailored toward their specific sport, as improvements made within a treatment session are further enhanced by exercises performed at home.
